Arsenal came out of the blocks with a real urgency and vigour against Leicester in this weekend’s early kickoff. We were creating some really decent chances, but it wasn’t until Saka delivered a perfect corner for Gabriel that we got a deserved 1-0 lead. Smith Rowe compounded Leicester’s misery with a tidy finish not long after. Leicester improved in the second half and if not for some outrageous saves from Ramsdale we might not have escaped with all 3 points. All the same, it was too little too late for Leicester and a good day at the office for Arsenal. Here are my player ratings…
RAMSDALE – 10: Very rarely do you give 10’s out for goalkeepers, but this performance was out of this world. Arsenal defended well, but Ramsdale was still needed on a number of occasions to keep the clean sheet. The save from Maddison’s free kick in particular was simply world class.
TOMIYASU – 7: Solid performance and generally had Barnes locked down. Didn’t offer loads going forward but that didn’t matter
WHITE – 8: He started so well, playing out from the back brilliantly, running forward with the ball and defending well. He largely dealt with Vardy very well.
GABRIEL – 9: Imperious in defence and he got a crucial goal as well. In the current market, getting Gabriel for £23 million is perhaps the best business we have done in years.
TAVARES – 7: Very promising performance by Tavares. Every time I watch this young fullback I question how we managed to get him for just £7 million.
PARTEY – 8: Dominant. Composed. World class. These are the performances we need to get used to with Partey. He has been brilliant this season and was fantastic in this game. Hardly gave Leicester a kick in the first half.
LOKONGA – 6: Perhaps a 6 is harsh, he was solid but I would say a bit of a passenger in midfield. Not a bad game, he just didn’t do much to wow me.
SAKA – 7: Decent. Created the first goal and some other good chances. But was slightly wasteful by his usual standards
SMITH ROWE – 8: If this guy doesn’t get an England call up on the next International Break, I will be shocked. He always puts in promising and creative performances and now he is starting to add goals to his game. Soon, he will be one of the league’s best players
AUBAMEYANG – 7: Good press, some tidy moments, but will be disappointed for not contributing too much by way of chances and goals
LACAZETTE – 7: Had a hand in the second and was very good in that CF/No.10 role. We sustain attacks so much better with Lacazette because he holds the ball up and brings others into play
ARTETA – 8: An interesting formation that clearly worked. We came out firing, got a comfortable lead and then managed the game reasonably well
