Arsenal are set to receive an influx of £22 million for the transfer of Joe Willock to Newcastle.
The player has been linked with a permanent move to the club he was on loan at for the second half of last season. It is thought that that deal is finally being sorted out.
Steve Bruce has been very vocal in his desire for Newcastle to sign Willock and he will now get his wish.
The fee has reportedly been agreed for a few days at around £22 million, however, there was a delay regarding personal terms.
Though now, finally, Sky have reported that personal terms have been agreed.
Charles Watts even reported yesterday evening that Willock said goodbye to his teammates after training at London Colney.
I do think if we played hardball we maybe could have got more money, perhaps around £30 million. But, I still think it was right to cash in. We have to remember, that prior to his purple patch in Newcastle Willock had been given opportunities at Arsenal which we never really took by the scruff of the neck.
I think it is a question of system. Willock is a goalscoring midfielder, suited to teams that play direct football and are happy to sit with minimal possession.
At Arsenal, he never demonstrated the kind of attributes that would make him a stalwart in Arteta’s team.
However, it only becomes a good decision to sell him if we use the funds well. Maddison or Odegaard is an absolute must.
