The Athletic confirm Arsenal interest in swap deal for £77 million superstar

Over the last few days we have been seeing a number of rumours linking Arsenal with Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan.

Until now, I really did not see much behind those rumours. I thought it was a strange rumour. But I did say I would not start to get excited until the interest got reliably confirmed.

The Athletic and David Ornstein have now confirmed it! Ornstein claims that the interest came about when negotiating with Inter for Bellerin and the interest for the 23-year-old is very genuine. It makes sense; we need a top striker and seem to only be targeting players under 24/25 in that regard. Applying that criteria and there are few more ideal than Martinez in world football right now.

Ornstein confirmed that we mentioned Lacazette + cash, but the only way to get this done is if Inter take a huge amount of cash whether with a player or without. The player has 2 years left on his current deal and Inter, who need some money, would be willing to cash in if it helped them keep Romelu Lukaku this summer.

In that sense, it would be a simple deal to negotiate. Inter are very willing to sell if the price is right.

Suprisingly, Ornstein also said that Martinez could be persuaded with a move to Arsenal (presumably as we are likely to offer him a huge pay rise on his £80k per week Inter deal).

Therefore, now the ball is in Arsenal’s court. The rumour is now a lot more realistic than we thought. All we have been hearing is that there is money to spend for Arsenal this summer; this would be the kind of deal that would prove it. Imagine if we sign Maddison and Martinez; that would be the kind of ambition and ruthlessness in the market that we have never seen from Arsenal.

That would be identifying two of our weakest areas and then solving them with two exceptional signings; two borderline world-class players.
