Arsenal’s pursuit of a new defensive midfielder to play alongside Thomas Partey next season has been no secret.
In fact, our pursuit of Manuel Locatelli has been no secret either.
The Sassuolo player had a stellar Euros with eventual winners Italy, which has attracted a lot of interested from some of Europe’s top clubs.
The two most likely destinations right now seem to be Arsenal or Juventus. It is thought that the player would prefer a move to Juventus but Sassuolo will only let that happen if they can match Arsenal’s offer.
News last night confirmed that Arsenal have bid €40 million plus €5 million in potential add ons, which Sassuolo have accepted.
Meanwhile, their negotiations with Juventus seem to have hit a bit of a stumbling block, with Juventus offering a season-long loan with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met for €30 million next summer.
Naturally, this offer was rejected by Sassuolo.
I think it is a bit early to get excited about this one; we are at Juventus’ mercy really whereby the second they match our bid, it is fair to say we will have no chance of signing him. This could just be a way to get Juventus to pay more money. Either way, it is a good sign that Arsenal are so serious about signing a DM. Clearly, there is a lot of money available and I have faith that we will sign a top-quality DM this summer, whether that be Locatelli or someone else.
