Arsenal finally agree £50 million deal for rising-star centre back

This is one of those transfer sagas which we tend to see Arsenal involved in.

We show an initial interest in a player early in the window, they set an asking fee, we slowly get closer and closer to meeting that valuation until eventually the panic sets in towards the end of the window and we pay what they asked for.

This time, Arsenal have shown a lot more conviction. A few weeks ago, we bid around £40 million for Brighton’s Ben White. Brighton always wanted £50 million.

Well after putting things on pause during the Euros, Arsenal have now agreed a deal for £50 million for White according to David Ornstein and Charles Watts.

It is thought that the deal is all but confirmed, however with the player still on holiday after the Euros, it may take a while before he is officially announced as an Arsenal player.

This is so positive. Do I think he is worth £50 million? Not really, he probably is a £35-40 million centre-back. However, regardless this guy will be a huge success at Arsenal. Versatile, mobile, reads the game very well for a man so young and is so effortlessly comfortable on the ball.

So far, it looks like Tavares, Lokonga and White are our first 3 signings this summer and I must say that is a hugely promising start. A young backup left-back option, a young backup DM option and a young centre back who can walk straight into the starting 11. What’s more, these signings clearly show there is a lot of money available this summer. We wouldn’t spend around £75 million on three players that aren’t a massive priority, if we didn’t also have some cash spare to go and sign a top-quality DM and a creative midfielder.

From here, I want to see Locatelli, Maddison/Aouar and a striker (ideally Isak).
