Arsenal closing in on £54 million top midfield target

Despite reports, that James Maddison is the priority midfield signing this summer, reports have also emerged suggesting that Arsenal are preparing a deal for Houssem Aouar. Some even suggest that deal is close to being agreed.

We chased Aouar franticly last summer. Lyon demanded £54 million for him last summer, but Arsenal couldn’t get past their £45 million valuation. In the end, when a deal seemed on the cards it fell apart due to Aouar’s agent.

Whereas now, Lyon’s demands have dropped dramatically. Due to some of their financial problems, €25 million would reportedly be enough for him. According to Alexis Bernard we have offered €20 million but conversations are ongoing.

I think this is a no brainer for Arsenal. Clearly Arteta is a huge fan of Aouar. He can play as a number 10, out wide or even in a deeper role next to Partey. In fact, in some of the games where we might expect more possession, we could see Partey sitting in front of the defence, Aouar doing the Santi Cazorla job, Smith Rowe playing behind the striker, Saka and Pepe on the wings with Auba through the middle. That is exciting.

But we have to move fast, with Spurs also reportedly interested in signing him. I think we would be a far more appealing move for Aouar than Spurs, but we need to make sure we sign him before they up the bidding.
