By all accounts, Arsenal are going to be very busy this summer as they plan a rebuild to get the club back to where it belongs.
So far, most of that seems to be behind the scenes with Arsenal yet to announce their first signing of the summer (though Lokonga, Tavares and White are all still expected to become Arsenal players in the coming days and weeks).
One of the priorities this summer will be signing a new creative midfielder. Arsenal had no creative midfielder last season until promoting Emile Smith Rowe and signing Odegaard. But with Odegaard unlikely to return, Arsenal will need another guy to challenge Smith Rowe and help his development.
James Maddison and Houssem Aouar seem like the main targets right now. If Arsenal do get priced out of a move for Maddison, a deal for Aouar could be on the cards.
Reports yesterday from Alexis Bernard of Le10Sport suggested Arsenal even submitted an offer for Aouar with Lyon only wanting €25 million for the midfield maestro.
We had been very close last season to signing him but were unwilling to meet their £54 million valuation. That valuation has decreased massively as Lyon find themselves desperate to sell to balance their books.
For that price it is an absolute no brainer for Arsenal. He can play behind the striker and be rotated with Smith Rowe, or in more comfortable games he could play deeper in the pivot next to Thomas Partey. James Maddison would be a great signing, but if we still want to sign a striker, a right back and another DM, we might need to save some pennies on this deal.
What do you think Gooners, Aouar for £25 million, or Maddison for £60 million?
