Aston Villa set to beat Arsenal to major £40 million top target

Last night Arsenal fans were dealt a really devasting blow in their hopes to see a new playmaker at the Emirates next season.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Emi Buendia has been no secret over the last few weeks. It was thought that going into the summer we were prioritising Martin Odegaard. However, with whispers from Spain suggesting Madrid would play hardball over him, we accelerated our pursuit of Buendia with an official offer to Norwich (though some reports suggest we are still yet to make that offer).

However, an opening £30 million offer was turned down by Norwich. Reports now suggest that Buendia is on the verge of being announced as Aston Villa’s new signing. The Villains had an offer of £33 million (which could reach £40 million with add ons) accepted and it is thought personal terms have also been agreed.

At first, this is really frustrating news. He is such a top player and would be perfect for Arsenal in so many ways. One one hand, it really shows the state of the club right now if we are getting outbid £3 million by a smaller club for a guy who was our plan B!

However, I can’t help but think there is something more to this. We know the Arsenal board is tight, but surely they aren’t so stupid as to let £3 million be the reason we miss out on Buendia. Surely, either we didn’t ever make that bid or we have somebody bigger and better in mind.

Either way, Arsenal need to hurry up and make a couple of promising signings before the Euros, otherwise even the most optimistic Arsenal fans will start to lose faith in the Kroenke’s willingness to fulfil this promise to get Arsenal back to where they belong.
