Rumours have emerged that Arsenal are set for a major shake up in the goalkeeping position this summer.
It is thought by some that Leno could be on his way out of Arsenal, and Arsenal are on the verge of securing the signature of Ajax’s Andre Onana.
Onana, 25, has for the last few years been one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. In fact, he was statistically one of the top performers in the 18/19 and 19/20 Champions League campaigns.
Given his quality, you might be wondering why he is available for such a cut price. Well, this is for two reasons. Firstly, he is about to begin the last 12 months of his contract and appears unwilling to extend his stay with Ajax.
The second reason why he is so cheap is more complicated. Back in February, it was revealed that Onana had received a ban from UEFA for taking a prohibited substance. Onana’s version of events is that he woke up needing an aspirin but unintentionally took some of his wife’s pregnancy medicine, as the packaging was similar. This is a banned substance.
Our interest in Onana was first reported by Charles Watts in early May. Yesterday, Dutch outlet NOS confirmed that Arsenal are on the verge of signing him. The cost will depend on the result of Onana’s appeal against UEFA’s decision. If the ban gets reduced, we could pay between €7-9 million to sign him. Whereas, if the ban stands we will pay just €2 million.
I think either way this is amazing business. He is a top keeper, arguably already better than Leno or certainly on that sort of level. Plus, for a keeper he is still so young. If Leno does want to leave and we can sell him, whilst bringing in Ryan and Onana and still making potentially £20 million, that is amazing business.
