With just 12 months left on his current deal, the future of our topscorer this season, Alex Lacazette, seems extremely in doubt.
Some rumours point towards us selling, some suggest Arteta might be willing to extend his deal. However, should Lacazette move away from the Emirates this summer, it is thought that Arsenal have identified £20 million man, Odsonne Edouard of Celtic, to replace him.
The young Frenchman has 86 goals in 196 appearances for the Scottish giants. From what I have seen of him, stylistically he would be very good at what Lacazette does for Arsenal; happy to play with his back to goal, lay off to oncoming wingers and run the channels.
However, signing the Frenchman won’t be easy. It is rumoured that he could cost anywhere between £15 million and £20 million, due to him too having just a year left on his contract.
But, Arsenal will face fierce competition from Leicester and Brighton. Leicester boss Rodgers worked with him at Celtic and fancies him as a long term replacement for Jamie Vardy. Whereas Brighton boss Graham Potter has acknowledged signing a striker this summer is a priority; Brighton famously had a very poor season when it comes to taken their chances and winning games which they dominated.
Overall, I think this would be a great move. Up front isn’t a huge priority for me, and with Auba still at the club I can’t see us going out and breaking any records to bring in a striker. But, if Lacazette does leave, our only backup to Auba would be a fledgling Folarin Balogun. Martinelli can play there but is arguably better on the left. We need a guy who still has time to grow, yet has experience and the ability to fill in for Aubameyang or even start ahead of him if Auba cannot recover his form next season.
