An update on Arsenal’s pursuit of £50 million 22-year-old

There has been some discussion and various reports suggesting that Martin Odegaard being signed permanently is a top priority for Arsenal this summer.

The Norwegian playmaker joined Arsenal on loan from Real Madrid in the January transfer window and has largely impressed the Arsenal fan base. His calm nature and ability to pick a pass have seen some fans liken him to a young Mesut Ozil.

It was thought that Zidane was never really keen on Odegaard and would have been happy to let him go in their pursuit of the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland this summer.

However, the news has now broke, from respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, that Zidane will be leaving Real Madrid this summer with former Juventus boss Allegri the favourite to replace him.

This leaves the future of Martin Odegaard very, very uncertain. Real Madrid have put some stars up for sale such as Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale as they look to raise funds for Erling Haaland or Mbappe. Perhaps, Allegri will take the same stance as Zidane and will try and get around £50 million for Odegaard.

However, if Real Madrid do go all in for Erling Haaland, the prospect of linking him up with his good friend from the national team, might convince Allegri to keep Odegaard at the club.

But what do you think Arsenal fans? I for one have been impressed with Odegaard’s performances but would not be distraught if we must look elsewhere. For example, Jack Grealish, Emi Buendia and Houssem Aouar could all be available this summer. Plus, £50 million for Odegaard does seem a touch steep. Buendia got more goals and assists in a struggling Norwich side in 2019/20. Plus, while Odegaard can only really play that number 10 role, Buendia can play deep, as a 10 or even out wide. For less money, Buendia seems like more than an adequate alternative.
