Arsenal could now miss out on signing Yves Bissouma as Leicester prepare a rival offer, according to reports.
At just 24 years of age, Bissouma has impressed since his switch to Brighton in 2018. The midfielder has made 77 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls, so will need no time to adapt to the physicality of English football, should he leave the Amex this summer.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Mali international since January, with Football London reporting a formal approach could be made in the summer. However, it now appears that Arsenal will face a battle for his signature as Leicester City join the race. It’s believed that Brendan Rodgers has been following the Brighton midfielder, with a desire to pair him with Wilfred Ndidi in midfield next season.
Despite this, Arsenal supposedly remain in poll position to sign the midfielder. It is believed that Bissouma’s preferred destination is the Emirates, with reports claiming the 24 year-old would choose to play for the Gunners over any other club. Why? Bissouma is a boyhood Arsenal fan and is determined to one day wear the famous red and white shirt.
In preparation for a move, Arsenal have already initiated contact with the player’s agent, Michael N’Cho, about the prospect of signing the midfielder. Likewise, having signed Maty Ryan on loan from the Seagulls in January, it is hoped that negotiations between the two clubs will run smoothly, given past experience.
With the uncertainty over the futures of several Arsenal midfielders, the move seems like a no-brainer. After failing to hit the same heights as in his first loan spell, Dani Ceballos looks destined to be heading back to Real Madrid this summer. Granit Xhaka has become an integral part of the Gunner’s squad this campaign, but could still find himself moving on this window. Similarly, there is question marks over Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ role in the Arsenal squad; the 23 year-old has a strong desire to play in central midfield, but Arteta prefers to deploy the England international as a fullback.
According to reports, it will cost Arsenal between £30-£40 million to bring Bissouma to the Emirates this summer. However, with Brighton not yet safe from danger, this fee could drop if they go down to the Championship. Defensively, the 24 year-old is strong in the tackle, and provides security in the centre of the pitch. But the midfielder is also efficient on the ball; a prolific dribbler and strong passer, Bissouma is not afraid to drive up the pitch.
Arsenal fans have been crying out for Edu to sign Bissouma since January, a perfect midfield partner for Thomas Partey. However, with the impact of COVID-19 still taking effect and Arsenal in danger of not qualifying for Europe next season, the Mali international may be out of the Gunner’s budget.
Yves Bissouma would undoubtedly strengthen the Arsenal midfield, and help Arteta’s side push for a top 4 finish next season.
Hopefully Edu can make this move a reality in the summer.
