As the futures of Guendouzi, Torreira and Elneny seem increasingly up in the air, it is likely that one of the positions Mikel Arteta will wish to address in the summer is that central midfield position.
For most of the season, Arsenal have played with Xhaka and Partey in that pivot, with Ceballos filling in when necessary. However, Ceballos will be returning to Madrid this summer and we still don’t know whether he might return to Arsenal for another year. With that in mind, Arteta will be looking to add more depth to that spot.
A number of players have been linked in that area, including Yves Bissouma of Brighton and Soumare of Lille. The latest name on the list is Sander Berge of Sheffield United.
James Shield, a Sheffield United correspondent, recently reported that Arsenal are monitoring his situation, with the Blades side likely to need to raise funds if they fail to stay in the Premier League. The Blades have had a poor season and whilst relegation has not been mathematically confirmed, it is pretty much a formality at this stage.
Berge has a value of £16 million and with Sheffield going down and the Norwegian defensive midfielder arguably too good a player for the Championship, he might be tempted to make the switch and force his way back into the Premier League.
Overall, I think this would be a decent signing. For me, we need to try and sign Odegaard permanently, perhaps a Ceballos number 8 replacement and/or a player in the mould of Berge. Someone who can be dynamic in our midfield, play through the lines but also cover our fullbacks when they bomb forward. Berge or Bissouma would both be really good at that
