Arsenal fans are delighted with the signing of Martin Odegaard, but many will already be thinking about this summer, and who Arsenal might sign in the event that Odegaard heads back to Real Madrid (we cannot rule out an extension or permanent deal just yet).
Some clues may come from Arsenal’s list of targets over this January window. We all know about Houssem Aouar, and you can be pretty certain that name will pop up again in the summer if Odegaard doesn’t stay. But who else have Arsenal been considering as a creative option?
We’ve speculated about Dortmund’s Julian Brandt, Norwich’s Emi Buendia, and RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer. Now, top transfer source Fabrizio Romano has revealed what exactly Arsenal were plotting before the Odegaard move happened:
This is pretty much in line with what David Ornstein said in the build-up to Odegaard’s signing, speaking to VGTV:
So Arsenal did move for Buendia, but that never got too advanced, most likely because the Gunners were not convinced that the 24-year-old Argentine could offer the kind of quality that Martin Odegaard will be expected to bring.
That isn’t to say that Buendia will not be considered again in the summer. Arsenal could well be keeping an eye on him and it will be interesting to see how this develops. Norwich look set to return to the Premier League next season, and Buendia has been a regular starter in their push for the Championship title. He has also netted 7 times.
