The Curious Tale of Matteo Guendouzi

Written by Josh Andrews

As it stands in July 2020, Matteo Guendouzi appears to be in exile at Arsenal after numerous issues have caused a seemingly irrepairable relationship between himself and head coach Mikel Arteta.

Despite being a young player with a lot of talent, Guendouzi looks to be on the way out of Arsenal – with reported interest from Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

So where has it gone wrong for the french midfielder?

Under Unai Emery, it’s difficult to find much fault in the way Guendouzi performed. He was young and raw with heaps of potential, and Emery was happy to use him as a first team regular. Some reports suggest that Guendouzi acted up occasionally, but nothing serious of note.

The real issues arose once Mikel Arteta became head coach and during a training camp in Dubai, Guendouzi had a bust up with his new manager after clashing with a teammate – reported to be Sokratis.

This incident caused some unrest within the Arsenal camp, with David Luiz reportedly trying to get Guendouzi to behave in a more professional manner. Guendouzi’s attitude doesn’t appear to have changed.

Guendouzi appears to be a player with a lot of brass and bluster. Theincident involving Neil Maupay at Brighton where Guendouzi allegedly boasted about his high wages at Arsenal was a clear indicator of what his character might be like.

Bernard Casoni, Guendouzi’s former coach at FC Lorient recalls a difficult relationship.

“Guendouzi’s problem is not physical and is not technical. It’s his attitude, it’s not good for the team or the coach. “My relationship with him wasn’t very good.”

Bernard Casoni – July 8. 2020

It appears now, that Guendouzi’s time at Arsenal may be coming to an end.
