Arsenal agree on a permanent deal for loaned defender Pablo Mari

Arsenal may have their centre back pairing for the future in William Saliba and Pablo Mari. According to a new report from the Daily Mail, the Gunners have agreed a deal to sign the 26-year-old Spanish defender Mari from Flamengo for a fee which is rumoured to be around the £14m mark.

If you ask me, this is smart business from the Gunners. It’s clear that a new centre-back signing needs to be made since it looks like David Luiz has played his last game in an Arsenal shirt. With the Coronavirus pandemic hindering clubs from a financial perspective, they must make the most of the cheap options available to them and Mari comes as a risk free signing.

He came off injured in the early stages of the defeat to Manchester City early in the week. However, Mikel Arteta has seen enough of his countryman to offer a permanent contract to the defender. Truth be told, Mari’s loan deal did seem positive in the buildup to the break and he has also looked impressive during the break.

Mari would be the perfect candidate to partner William Saliba. While neither of them has much experience in the Premier League, they have performed to the highest standard in their respective leagues. Saliba in particular is known for being one of the best defenders in Ligue 1. Arsenal are truly lucky to have them both.

Pablo Mari will be eager to make a name for himself in the Arsenal starting XI. I must say too, that it’s refreshing to see a centre back pairing at Arsenal where neither player is over the age of 30 years old. It feels like a lifetime since we saw this. While there’s no harm in experience, a lot of the options Arsenal have gone for in recent years have been, to put it nicely, past their sell-by dates.

What do you make of Arsenal’s decision to sign Pablo Mari?
