Arsenal: Thomas Partey makes his future at Atletico Madrid clear amid Gunners links

Thomas Partey is thought to be at the top of Arsenal’s summer wishlist, and it’s clear to see why. He is an immensely talented midfielder who would benefit the Gunners in many ways. He would be the key to completing their well-rounded and versatile midfielder, as his playing style is similar to the recently departed Aaron Ramsey.

However, he was always going to be a difficult signing to make. Especially given the Coronavirus situation, Arsenal’s aim is to save as much money as possible in the summer transfer window. Now, Partey does have a £45m release clause in his Atletico contract which would leave the club with no choice but to let him go. In normal circumstances, this would have been an easy option, but of course, circumstances in the market have changed.

According to a new report from the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal have finally received some clarity on the whole Partey situation. They’ve reported that the Ghanaian midfielder wishes to stay in Madrid, with higher wages, rather than signing for Arsenal.

This is obviously a significant blow, as it’s our best transfer target out of the equation. However, the club should not treat it as a blow. As a fanbase we are largely pessimistic, which serves us well in times like this, as we have prepared for this news months in advance. We can only hope that the board has done the same, to prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

There are, of course, plenty of other options out there for the recruitment team to consider. Over the last few weeks, we have seen a sparked interest in the Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu, so this could coincide with the decision made by Partey. Both Kokcu and Partey share the same box-to-box traits, so it’s clear to see why Arteta has identified him as an ideal alternative.

Do you think Arsenal will sign a midfielder this summer and if so, who would you prefer to sign?
