There is a lot of uncertainty in the Arsenal dugout this season, most notably involving the futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Lucas Torreira. Torreira’s uncertainty was somewhat self-inflicted, as it was reported that his agent had been in discussion with the Arsenal board over a potential sale of the player to Italy.
However, it’s now reported that the Uruguayan international is considering his options even further. A new report from Evening Standard has claimed that the midfielder “dreams” of a move to Boca Juniors to play in the Argentinian football divisions before he retires.
It’s important this report isn’t taken out of context. Torreira is not saying he wants the move now, as in this summer. He is not saying that he will definitely leave Arsenal right now to play in Argentina. However, it does show that his long-term plans aren’t to retire with Arsenal, which I suppose is fair enough since he hasn’t been here long enough to make such a claim.
However, the good news for the Gunners is that there aren’t many push factors that would make him want to leave this summer. He is clearly in Mikel Arteta’s plans, since he’s started essentially every game since the Spaniard took over and he is a real fan favourite, with fans chanting his name on a regular basis.
I suppose these are not ultimately reasons to stay if he is unhappy, but they can certainly help to boost morale. Playing time is important, as is having a place in the hearts of the fans. Torreira has both of those, but the club must respect his decision should he want to leave, as the last thing the players need is a negative atmosphere in the dressing room.
