Thomas Partey to Arsenal rumours have calmed down somewhat in recent days, with all attention on Project Restart as teams plan to get back to action from June 17 onward. However, we do have an update for you today, and it comes from well-known Spanish journalist Patricia Cazón, who writes primarily for AS, one of the major sources for football news in Spain.
Patricia Cazón reports that Arsenal are the “keenest” of clubs interested in Partey and, before the pandemic struck, expressed real intent to meet his €50 million release clause. As a result, Thomas has stalled on contract extension talks with Atletico.
It is well-known by now that Atletico want to extend Partey’s contract beyond 2022, because this would allow them to signficantly increase the release clause. As of now, they are still very much at risk of losing Partey. It seems Partey wants to see how far the Arsenal interest actually goes before giving Atletico a final decision.
The report goes on to say that at this time, everything is on hold, with the player’s focus fully on completing the season. Completely understandable.
The news comes after we heard earlier this week that Atletico may already be resigned to losing Thomas, with other options being considered.
According to Ghana Soccer Net, Diego Simeone has identified Napoli’s Allan as a potential replacement. The report says:
“Manager Diego Simeone has started planning life after his most trusted midfielder by making inquiries about Brazilian midfielder Allan, who is also a target of Everton. The Rojiblancos want to use funds from the sale of Partey to sign the defensive midfielder.”Ghana Soccer Net, May 2020
