Arsenal have been linked with a number of wingers recently, whether on loan deals or permanent transfers, and the latest name Arsenal fans are discussing is Gabriel Veron, a talent straight out of the academy of Brazilan club Palmeiras (who play in the top tier of Brazilian football). Commonly viewed as the most exciting talent to emerge from Palmeiras’ academy since Gabriel Jesus, and possibly the hottest young talent in the country at the moment, Veron has attracted attention from all over the world. Veron featured for his country won the Golden Ball at last year’s Under-17 World Cup.
“Palmeiras fans are rightly excited each time they get the chance to see him in action, a sense that is intensified by knowledge that they will likely not be able to do so for much longer. Increasingly, South America’s finest prospects are being whisked across the Atlantic as soon they turn 18, fast-tracked to finish their development in the gilded galleries of Europe’s big five leagues.”Joshua Law, Forbes
The latest update comes from Palmeiras’ manager himself, as he spoke to ESPN Brasil today:
“I think that the imminent need for a sale, whether it be from Veron or any other player, can only be done according to an evaluation in a month and a half, two months from now, when we will be more certain of what is to come. Perhaps there is a need for the sale (by Gabriel Veron). But who is going to buy? Is there going to be someone who buys? Officially, proposals have not yet arrived for him. There were polls, people asking for values, etc. But, at the moment, Palmeiras has no interest in getting rid of him.”Cícero Souza
Of course, admitting that Veron may leave does not in any way confirm that Arsenal are interest. That news came earlier in the quarantine period though, when a club source spoke to Yahoo Esportes!, Brazil’s version of Yahoo Sports, saying that Arsenal and Barcelona are eyeing the player, and Palmeiras will likely want €30 million. Both clubs are believed to have made enquiries. Everton saw a €15 million offer turned down in January.
Arsenal have already signed Martinelli and Pablo Mari from Brazil since Edu Gaspar became club technical director. We cannot say whether or not the price tag is too much for Arsenal, but this is definitely a rumour worth watching.
