Thomas Partey to Arsenal looks much likelier today than it did yesterday and Arsenal fans will certainly be delighted with the latest news that the player favours a move to the Emirates Stadium. According to Mike McGrath of the Daily Telegraph, the Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder has “told those close to him he has ambitions of proving himself in the Premier League”, and is hoping for Arteta’s Arsenal to agree terms with Atletico.
If you haven’t been following this saga, it’s been a surprisingly hectic one given that there is no football being played and we have little information about how clubs will pull off transfers despite all the financial burdens that this crisis has introduced. Long story short, Arsenal want Partey and have wanted him for some time. Partey was keen on it last year, and – now – we know he is still keen. Atletico won’t have much of a choice if someone meets Partey’s release clause of £40-45 million, but they can try to renew his contract, which would see the clause increase.
“He was high on the list of targets for Mikel Arteta before football shut down for the coronavirus pandemic and a move will hinge on whether Arsenal can structure a deal.”Mike McGrath, Telegraph
Does that mean Partey will push for a move? The report does not elaborate on that, but it is safe to say that Arsenal would love it if he did. The word is out that Arsenal do not have too much money to work with here, and Arteta has a bunch of players on his wish list, including centre backs like Stade Reims’ Axel Disasi.
Atletico have no reason to accept anything below the release clause – unless Partey starts to push for a move. That isn’t the only way Arsenal could work around their financial weaknesses though. Selling players remains a likely route that the Gunners will take, with players like Mustafi and Mkhitaryan expected to head for permanent exits.
It’s also known now that Atletico are eyeing Alexandre Lacazette, so don’t rule that swap deal out just yet, until we hear more.
