The latest batch of Arsenal transfer news suggests that Arsenal aren’t as interested in Jerome Boateng as it was once was thought. The Sun recently reported that Arsenal were prepared to battle with London rivals Chelsea for Boateng’s signature but this could all be over-exaggerated.
According to a new report from Sky Germany, Arsenal is certainly prioritising a move for a centre back in the uncertain summer transfer window. However, their first choice is not Jerome Boateng and they will instead focus on signing Dayot Upamecano or Jonathan Tah.
These two names should come as no surprise to Arsenal supporters, as it’s not the first time the Gunners have been interested in signing them. Indeed, much of their recent summer transfer window was focused on trying to sign Dayot Upamecano but they failed to do so, instead signing William Saliba from the French top flight.
It’s been reported that Arsenal have indeed been in contact with Boateng’s agents, despite the Coronavirus pandemic making situations complicated. However, Boateng is not Arsenal’s first-choice and this should be respected.
Boateng would have been the “get out of jail free card” and he is the calibre of signing that Arsenal fans have seen too much of in recent seasons. Cheap, old, and did I mention cheap? Instead, they need another young signing to partner William Saliba; with Upamecano ageing at 21 years old and Tah being a 24-year-old, they are the ideal options.
Obviously, these signings come with risk. Tah is not going to be cheap, neither is Upamecano. They are two of the most renowned available centre backs in the market as they are full of talent, having already had plenty of experience in Germany at such a young age. That said, Stan Kroenke and company will have to cough up the funds but it is certainly doable if negotiations are done correctly.
